Iraqi cave fishes at the edge

Now very rare, the Iraqi cave Garra widdowsoni.

The Sheik Hadid Shrine sinkhole, near Haditha in the western bank of  Euphrates River in the western desert of Anbar province, holds two endemic species of  troglomorphic cyprinids, Garra (former Typhlogarra) widdowsoni and Caecocypris basimi. The Department of Biology at the University of Baghdad and myself have conducted a short field survey to determine (for the first time in 30 years) the status of these two species. Our findings were quite discouraging. Now, all but one place have been found to be dry and only the blind Garra was found in very low abundance. See our short news in the IUCN newsletter.
